The purpose of Title VI/Environmental Justice is to ensure non-discrimination in all SHA programs or activities receiving Federal financial assistance from the Federal Highway Administration. In accordance with 23 CFR 200, the Maryland State Highway Administration has established the Office of Equal Opportunity, with a designated individual who is responsible for assuring compliance with the provisions of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended and related laws, statues, Executive Orders and regulations. That position is the Title VI Officer.
The Title VI Officer for SHA is assigned to the Office of Equal Opportunity and has the lead responsibility for monitoring the Federal-aid Program in the following program areas: (1) Planning, (2)Project Development Process, (3) Right- of-Way, (4) Construction, and (5) Research.
Nondiscrimination Policy
It is the policy of the Maryland State Highway Administration, under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968; Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973; Age Discrimination Act of 1975; Section 324 of the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1973; Civil Rights Restoration Act of 1987; and other related statutes and regulations, that no person in the United States shall, on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, disability, religion familial status or retaliation, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be otherwise subjected to discrimination under any federally or non-federally funded program or activity administered by SHA or its sub-recipients
