The Traffic Monitoring System (TMS) Team administers the Maryland State Highway Administration's Traffic Monitoring Program. The program is responsible for the collection, processing, analysis, summarization, and dissemination of Maryland highway traffic data and is supported by a comprehensive, user friendly, management information computer database system.
Traffic Monitoring System Program
This document provides a brief description of our program, the sources, methodologies and procedures used to collect, validate; calculate and apply adjustment, axle-correction, and growth factors; and calculate Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) counts. In addition, the document describes the traffic data reports that culminate from the process, such as the Traffic Trends Report, the Traffic Volume Maps, and the Truck Volume Maps.
Data Collecting Information
The most recent information and templates for our data collecting consultants.
Traffic Volume Maps
This is a graphical representation of the Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) numbers displayed at each location on Maryland's road network. Traffic counts are reported as the number of vehicles expected to pass a given location on an average day of the year for all traffic-counting stations in the state.
Truck Volume Maps
The Truck Volume Maps are graphical representations which depict the average percentages of trucks at various locations on Maryland s roadways by county. Also included at these locations is the current Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT).
Maryland's Traffic Trends
This tabular report summarizes data from the Automatic Traffic Recorders (ATRs) into factors used to convert a short-term count into an AADT number. The factors reflect day of week, monthly, and seasonal variations of traffic flow.
Traffic Count Data
These are pre-formatted reports of raw (not factored) traffic counts. The count types include Classified (manual and machine), Turning Movement, Volume (machine), Vehicle Occupancy, and Permanent (ATRs).
Traffic Station History (PDF, 744 kb)
This tabular report reflects the AADT in Maryland for the last seven years (2002 through 2008) and the Annual Average Weekday Daily Traffic (AAWDT) for 2008. The report lists the county, route, mile point, station ID, description, AADT and the AAWDT for each station.
Vehicle Classification by Functional Class (PDF,122kb)
This report reflects the percent of vehicle classifications by functional class for the years 1998 through 2008.
