Time seems to stand still in Snow Hill, which looks and feels like a peaceful nineteenth-century village. Located at the head of the Pocomoke River close to the Atlantic Ocean, it was once an important Eastern Shore commercial center. Historic photographs reveal little change since this single-leaf bascule, one of the simplest and smallest of Marylandís movable spans, was built across the Pocomoke River in 1932. Carrying MD 12 it measures only 90 feet long, including the approach span. Its neoclassical concrete tenderís house is unoccupied; boaters must call in advance to schedule an opening.
