Project Name: |
I-495/I-95, Capital Beltway |
Location of Project: |
HOV LANES FEASIBILITY STUDY AM LEGION BR TO W. WILSON BR. |
Description: |
Study to widen I-495 and determine the feasibility of managed lanes from the American Legion Bridge to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge (42.20 miles). |
Scope: |
FULL BELTWAY STUDY
The Full Beltway Study limits include Maryland's entire
portion of the Beltway, 42 miles, which extend from the
American Legion Bridge to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.
The study area is within Montgomery and Prince
George's counties.
The purpose of the project is to improve regional
mobility, provide increased safety, maximize travel
operational efficiencies and address current and
forecasted travel demand in the Capital Beltway
corridor using cost effective methods while supporting
the area's economic growth and the environment.
The Capital Beltway provides an essential highway link
on the East Coast serving local, regional and interstate
trips. It is also the only circumferential route in the DC
area, connecting many radial routes. Current traffic
exceeds 200,000 vehicles/day in some sections;
projected to increase to nearly 300,000 vehicles/day by
2030.
JOINT MOBILITY STUDIES
In addition to the Full Capital Beltway Study, currently
Maryland and Virginia are conducting two joint mobility
studies (South Side and West Side Mobility Studies)
along the I-95/I-495 corridor.
SOUTH SIDE MOBILITY STUDY
The South Side Mobility study, which is conducted by the
Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation
(VDRPT), Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) and
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA)
along with Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT)
and Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA),
extends from the Springfield Interchange in Virginia
to MD 5 (Branch Avenue) in Maryland. The approximately
14 miles long South Side Mobility Study is anticipated to
be completed in 2008.
WEST SIDE MOBILITY STUDY
The west Side Mobility Study, which is led by SHA and supported by VDOT, is also
14 miles long and extends north from VA 193 in Virginia,
along the west side of the Capital Beltway, along the
I-270 West Spur, along I-270, to the I-370 Interchange.
The study is expected to be completed in
Summer 2007. More detail on these Joint Mobility
Studies is provided on the separate website for the
Capital Beltway Study under the Unique Design Features
below.

What is under study: |
FULL BELTWAY STUDY:
Several alternates were presented at the May 2004
Open House. In brief format, these alternates included:
Alternative 1 - No-Build - Includes improvements already
programmed, maintenance and safety improvements.
Alternative 2 Ė 6 & 4 Alternative would include
construction of an additional lane and the conversion of
one existing lane to ETLs in each direction.
Alternative 3 - 8 & 2 Alternative would involve the
construction of one new lane in each direction to be
used as ETLs.
SOUTH SIDE MOBILITY STUDY
The purpose of the South Side Mobility Study is to examine the lane configuration and connectivity of the various projects along I-95/I-495 in the Woodrow Wilson project area and to evaluate mode usage and optimal timing of the two median lanes on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. The Phase I, which included collecting all transportation studies in the Woodrow Wilson Bridge project area, has been completed. Phase II studies are just being initiated. For additional information on the study visit http://southsidecapitalbeltway.org.
WEST SIDE MOBILITY STUDY
The study will evaluate the mobility including lane continuity and traffic operation along this segment. The connectivity between VDOTís HOT lanes from south of SR 193 and Marylandís Beltway ETLs as well as the operational issues along I-270 to I-370.
