County: Garrett Project Number: GA646_11
US 0219 NORTH CHESTNUT RIDGE ROAD I-68 TO THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE LINE
Project Name:
US 219 North, Chestnut Ridge Road

Location of Project:
I-68 TO THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE LINE

Description:
Study to reconstruct/relocate US 219 from I-68 to the Pennsylvania State Line (2.54 miles). This represents Maryland's portion of a larger study of US 219, from the Myersdale Bypass in Pennsylvania to I-68 in Maryland.

Scope:
The US 219 Planning Study is a joint study between the Maryland State Highway Administartion and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Engineering and environmental studies are being conducted on a section of US 219 from I-68 in Garrett County, Maryland to Meyersdale in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.

US 219 is a major north-south route through western Pennsylvania. It links I-68 in Maryland to the Pennsylvania Turnpike and I-80, providing important access to small cities, towns and rural communities. Recognizing its importance to southwestern Pennsylvania, sections of US 219 have been upgraded to a four-lane, limited access facility. When the section under study is built, the improved corridor will run continuously between I-68 and US 22, providing a much needed transportation improvement for this area.

The project team is developing alternatives to address the transportation issues and economic development along the US 219 corridor. Through engineering and environmental studies and public involvement activities, the team will prepare a transportation improvement project.

What is under study:
Currently, the following three build alternatives are under study:

ALTERNATIVE D:

Alternative D begins at Hunsrick Summit and follows along the western foot of Meadow Mountain until Engles Mills. At that point, Alternative D travels in a southwesternly direction across the Piney Creek Valley and crosses over US 219 and continues to parallel US 219 to the west side. This alternative ties into I-68 just west of the existing US 219/I-68 interchange.

ALTERNATIVE E:

Alternative E starts at Hunsrick Summit and follows along the western foot of Meadow Mountain in Pennsylvania. At the Pennsylvania/Maryland border, Alternative E travels in a southwesternly direction east of the existing US 219. Alternative E ties into I-68 just east of the existing US 219/I-68 interchange.

ALTERNATIVE AE:

Alternative AE is a combination of the northern section of Alternative E from Hunsrick Summit to approximately the state line. At the state line, Alternative AE diverges from Alternative E and heads westward, crossing existing US 219 just south of the state line. The alignment then follows Alternative D south to I-68 just east of the existing US 219/I-68 interchange.
