Testing Lab/Certification Program
Office Of Materials And Technology Certifications

The Office of Materials and Technology (OMT) has training and certification programs for technicians performing quality control / quality assurance testing in Hot Mix Asphalt, Portland Cement Concrete, and Aggregates. OMT also certifies welders to work on Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) structures.

Hot Mix Asphalt - Training and certification programs are offered for Plant Control Technician (PCT) and Field Control Technician (FCT). Both courses consist of a written test and a demonstration of the technician's practical skills.

PCT - Certification deals primarily with the quality control sampling and testing of materials at the plant, including the proper loading of the finished product into the hauling vehicles.

Quality assurance testing consists of verifying the quality control test results through random sampling, split samples, and/or review of plant QC records.

FCT - Certification deals primarily with the quality control sampling and testing of materials on the project. This includes the use of the nuclear density gauge, the profilograph, and the random selection of core locations when required.

Quality assurance testing consists of verifying test results; the setup, calibration, and proper use of the nuclear density gauge; calibration, setup, and reading printouts of profilograph tests for accuracy and verification of ride incentive.
