Overview

Interstate 495 (the Capital Beltway) is one of the most heavily traveled roadways in the nation. In addition to daily commuters, the Beltway also is a vital transportation link for the Eastern Seaboard, moving commerce between Maine and Florida.

The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is the agency responsible for maintaining this roadway. Daily, more than 240,000 vehicles travel on this vital transportation artery, which significantly exceeds the Beltway’s design capacity. To perform the required repairs along the road, work must be scheduled in a way that minimizes disruption to traffic. This requires that work be performed during off-peak hours, typically at night or on weekends. While disruptions to traffic cannot be avoided entirely, SHA will do everything possible to keep work moving and minimize the hours of disruption.
