Welcome
In Fall 2004, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) completed a $1.4 million project to replace two bridges carrying MD 165 (Baldwin Mill Road) over the West Branch and its tributary.
The old bridges were built in 1931 and were nearing the end of their useful life. This section of MD 165 averages 9,000 vehicles per day. The project included: removal and replacement of both bridges; reconstruction of roadway approaches to the bridges; drainage improvements; installation of new pavement markings and traffic signs; and stream stabilization along the tributary of West Branch. The State’s contractor was Dewey Jordan Inc. of Frederick.
During the summer, SHA temporarily closed both bridges to through traffic to allow construction crews to work on both bridges at the same time, reducing the duration of the project. SHA provided a marked detour route for through traffic on MD 165, using MD 152 (Fallston Road), MD 146 (Jarrettsville Pike) and MD 23 (Norrisville Road).
The new bridges were open to traffic on October 11, 2004.
