The Baltimore Beltway (I-695) is the most important arterial highway in the Baltimore Metropolitan Area. It links several suburban communities and distributes traffic along the major arterial routes into Baltimore city. In addition to the transportation of goods and services and interstate travel, the highway is an important commuter route. It carries an average of 152,350 vehicles a day and is expected to carry as many as 168,000 by the year 2020. York Road (MD 45) is a principle arterial, which serves as a primary connection of the Baltimore Beltway to downtown Towson and Baltimore City. It carries an average of 53,900 vehicles per day and is expected to carry as many as 70,050 by 2020. The reconstruction of the interchange of these two major roadways will not only improve safety and traffic flow, it will provide another gateway landmark to Towson via an aesthetically improved bridge (similar to the Dulaney Valley Road Bridge). This project will also have the added benefit of providing for the future widening of I-695 to four lanes in each direction.
