US 29 at Randolph Road / Cherry Hill Road

The US 29 at Randolph Road project has been separated into two construction contracts. The first project was the construction of a Detour Road for Randolph Road/Cherry Hill Road at the intersection with US 29. The second contract will be construction of the interchange.

The existing intersection of US 29 and Randolph / Cherry Hill Roads contains numerous utilities, underground and overhead, which require relocation before the construction of the interchange. More specifically, the bridge over US 29 could not be constructed until the utilities are relocated. In addition, the complexity of the construction of the bridge justified the need for a detour road to maintain the traffic on Randolph and Cherry Hill Roads. As a result of these conditions, the decision was made to develop contract documents for a breakout project. This project included the construction of a Detour Road around the north side of the proposed bridge location. The project also contained the relocation of the utilities affected by the construction of the interchange. A utility corridor was generally located within the limits of the detour road.

The Detour Road / Utility Corridor Project was advertised on July 31, 2001. The pre-construction meeting with the contractor was held on November 15, 2001. Construction was completed in the winter of 2002.

The proposed Randolph Road interchange includes the reconstruction of an existing signalized intersection into an interchange at US 29 and East Randolph Road/Cherry Hill Road. The limits of this construction along US 29 extend from the Tech Road intersection to the Musgrove Road intersection. Roadway improvements include construction of a new grade separated interchange at the existing intersection of US 29 with East Randolph Road/Cherry Hill Road. Roadway improvements also include the realignment of 2500 feet along US 29 to provide for a shift to the west.

This interchange will be a single point urban diamond with "diamond" ramps that run along both sides of US 29 to carry traffic between US 29 and East Randolph Road/Cherry Hill Road. Retaining walls will be located between US 29 and the ramps and on the outside of the ramps along northbound US 29 before the intersection. Retaining walls will also be located along the southbound off-ramp on the outside between the ramp to East Randolph Road and the future ramp from Musgrove Road. A second bridge is being constructed to accomodate a furture ramp from Musgrove Road to southbound US 29.

East Randolph Road/Cherry Hill Road will be widened to accommodate the turning lanes at the signal with the ramps, as well as, to accommodate bike compatible outside lanes. There will be intersection improvements at the intersections with Old Columbia Pike at Randolph Road and Cherry Hill Road at Prosperity Drive. A bike path will also be constructed between the intersection of Prosperity Drive and Cherry Hill Road to Deer Park Lane.

At this time, the construction is substantially complete. Several weather sensitive items such as landscaping will be completed in the spring of 2006.
