US 29 at Musgrove Road / Fairland Road
The proposed Musgrove Road/Fairland Road interchange includes a new overpass on existing Musgrove Road alignment. At Musgrove Road, the access is only provided to the south from eastbound Musgrove Road. On US 29 southbound, Musgrove Road entrance ramp does not connect with US 29 immediately, but continues southward until it combines with the Randolph Road southbound entrance ramp. The only access that will be provided by this on-ramp is from eastbound Musgrove Road. All other access to US 29 will be provided using the Fairland Road interchange.
The proposed Fairland Road interchange is a diamond interchange. The ramps to and from US 29 will be tight to US 29. This concept will also have a u-turn on the northbound off ramp to Fairland Road across the bridge to provide direct access into the Verizon property on the west side of US 29. Also, one-way service roads will be constructed on both sides of US 29 between Musgrove and Fairland Road to provide access between the two Verizon properties on either side of US 29 without the need for additional traffic to be directed to the intersection of Musgrove and Fairland Road and Old Columbia Pike.
Fairland Road will be improved to modify turn lanes, construct of a median, provide accommodations for bike compatible outside lanes, a 5-foot sidewalk and an 8-foot bike path. Improvements also include minor widening at the intersection of Old Columbia Pike and Fairland Road. SHA has been coordinating it's design with Montgomery County's design of improvements to Fairland Road from US 29 to the County Line.
At this time, we are in the process of preparing preliminary design plans that include the horizontal and vertical alignments of the roadways.

The proposed US 29 at Briggs Chaney Road improvements include construction of a grade-separated interchange. Roadway improvements consist of depressing US 29 approximately 12 feet, raising Briggs Chaney Road approximately 12 feet and constructing a grade-separated interchange to replace the existing at-grade intersection. Briggs Chaney Road is proposed to cross over US 29 on a bridge at its current location. Diamond Ramps are proposed to be parallel to northbound US 29 and are separated by a retaining wall. A retaining wall is also proposed between the ramps and the adjacent property owners to minimize impacts. The southbound ramps will be a proposed Partial-Cloverleaf in the northwest quadrant. In order to maintain traffic on Briggs Chaney Road, a temporary bridge is required while US 29 is lowered and a permanent bridge can be constructed. The temporary bridge is now in place.
Briggs Chaney Road will be improved to modify turn lanes, construct of a median, provide accommodations for bike compatible outside lanes, a 5-foot sidewalk and an 8-foot bike path. Improvements also include minor widening at the intersection of Old Columbia Pike and Briggs Chaney Road. A bike path will also be constructed between Wexhall Drive and Briggs Chaney Road on the east side of US 29.
This project began construction in the winter of 2003 and is due to be complete in the fall of 2007.
