22 AWARD-WINNING STATE HIGHWAY PROJECTS BUILT IN "MARYLAND WITH PRIDE"
Transportation Secretary Flanagan Presents 22 Awards of Excellence for Highway and Bridge Design and Construction at 13th Annual Maryland Quality Initiative Conference
(January 19, 2006) - The Maryland Department of Transportation's State Highway Administration (SHA) and the Maryland Highway Contractors Association (MHCA) today announced the Maryland Quality Initiative (MdQI) Awards of Excellence winners for State highway projects completed during calendar year 2005. Transportation Secretary Robert L. Flanagan presented 22 awards to State and private sector highway industry teams at the thirteenth annual Maryland Quality Initiative Conference, held at the Baltimore Wyndham Inner Harbor Hotel in Baltimore. MdQI, a consortium of public highway agencies and industry associations, was initiated in 1990 to foster excellence in the quality of State highway construction projects. Highway design consultants and construction contractors participating in MdQI commit to exceed the minimum performance standards of a State contract and provide high-quality products and services.
“MdQI cultivates the partnership necessary to deliver the very best in roadway projects to Maryland motorists,” said State Highway Administrator Neil J. Pedersen. “This is particularly evident in the commitment to safety, which remains our number one priority.”
The MdQI mission is to provide the Maryland highway industry a forum that fosters coordinated and continuous quality improvement in order to ensure safe, efficient, and environmentally sensitive highways that meet the needs of all transportation stakeholders.
MdQI is comprised of: SHA; Maryland Transportation Authority; Federal Highway Administration; American Council of Engineering Companies; Maryland Asphalt Association; Maryland Aggregates Association; Maryland Highway Contractors Association; American Concrete Paving Association-Northeast Chapter; County Engineers Association of Maryland; and Maryland Ready-Mixed Concrete Association.
A panel of experts representing both public and private sectors of the highway industry reviewed the 2005 Award of Excellence nominations. Awards criteria included: design, specification compliance, traffic maintenance, cooperation, contract administration, materials compliance, production equipment, erosion and sediment control, adherence to schedules, subcontracting and overall quality.
MdQI is affiliated with the National Partnership for Highway Quality (NPHQ), founded in 1992 as the National Quality Initiative. NPHQ is a cooperative effort by the public and private members of the highway industry to place emphasis on quality improvement. Additional information on MdQI and NPHQ is available on-line at www.mdqi.org and www.nphq.org.
