I-495 Bridge Deck Replacement Project in Montgomery County

Four bridge decks are currently being replaced along I-495 between U.S. 29 (exit 30) and MD 97, Georgia Avenue (exit 31). Work on the bridge decks should be complete March 2002, weather permitting. Later this spring resurfacing will begin along the two-mile stretch and will be complete July. During construction, NO LANES along I-495 will be closed during rush hours, although lanes have been narrowed and shifted slightly. The project is necessary to replace the aging and deteriorating bridge decks as traffic volumes have increased to more than 250,000 vehicles each day in the area. Two new express bus routes are in place to provide motorists an alternative to "Beat the Beltway Blues" though service will end this April. New bus routes include Glenarden to Silver Spring and Glenarden to Bethesda. In addition, free bus transfers are being provided from MTA Route 929 to all Metrobus and Ride-On bus routes. For more information about the "Beat the Beltway Blues" transit service, please call MTA’s toll-free hotline at (800) 543-9809. For more information about the construction along I-495, please call SHA’s Office of Communications at (800) 323-6742.
