ILLUSTRATIONS
The following drawings are included to illustrate basic designs for an entrance. Existing features at or near the site need to be considered. Some of the items that will affect the final design of the entrance (including the length of acceleration and deceleration lanes) are: number of lanes, lane width, speed of the highway, horizontal and vertical alignment of the highway, existing traffic volumes, right of way availability and projected turning movements at the site. In any case, the final design of the entrance must be generally consistent with the following illustrations, SHA standards and the American Association of State Highway Transportation officials (AASHTO) policy.
Further, designers should recognize that entrances onto state highways can only function to the degree of efficiency that the interior traffic pattern will permit. Consequently, in developing the site plan, every effort should be made to employ accepted traffic engineering principles in designing the interior traffic pattern.
