US 29 Existing Bike Routes
- Currently, bicyclists use the existing 10-foot right shoulder along US 29 to travel from Howard County to Silver Spring.
- Old Columbia Pike runs parallel to US 29 from MD 198 to MD 650. Montgomery County Department of Public Works and Transportation has two projects, which will add 4-foot shoulders to Old Columbia Pike to accommodate bicyclists. This roadway is already signed as a bike route.
In conjunction with the Fairland Master Plan (approved in 1997), an alignment and provisions in the US 29 interchanges has been developed for a US 29 Commuter Bikeway between MD 198 and Industrial Parkway. This facility will complement the already existing facilities along US 29 as well as provide a local connection for recreation along the corridor. The map above shows the alignment of this facility along the east side of US 29.
Each segment of the bikeway will be constructed with each interchange.
Each interchange will include both an off-road bike paths and sidewalks along the cross streets (according to the Fairland Master Plan) and on-road bike compatible lanes to strengthen east-west access. These facilities will link to the US 29 Commuter Bikeway and Old Columbia Pike.
